Admission Regulations Art Therapy/Art Pedagogy

Persons will be admitted to the course who can demonstrate that they meet the following requirements:

1.  Higher education entrance qualification

(Admission requirements to study at the Fachhochschule Ottersberg, based on § 18, Section 1 of the Niedersächsische Hochschulgesetz (NHG), of 24th June 2002 and the decree of the Ministry of Science and Culture, Hanover of 24th April 2003)

 - The general university entrance qualification, a subject related university entrance qualification, or an education recognised by the responsible education ministry as being generally or for certain courses equivalent. In particular, applicants from the fields of design, and arts and crafts, performing arts, care and social work are considered by the Fachhochschule to be suitable.

-  A master tradesman/master craftsman qualification

- Successful completion of a course as a State Certified Technician or State Certified Business Economist or

-  In the case of certain courses, an equivalent education/training recognised by the ministry. Such education/training is to be appropriate, and defined in the decree of the Ministry of Science and Culture, Hanover of 24th April 2003. The Fachhochschule recognises the following education/training as being appropriate:
State certified educationalist, state certified home and family carer, state certified designer, curative education carer with a defined vocational qualification, vocational training as a nurse, geriatric or children’s nurse or midwife in accordance with the above Ministry of Science and Culture decree.
In cases of doubt, applicants may apply to the Landesschulbehörde, Dez. 401, Postfach 203, 30002 Hanover for certification that their education/training is equivalent to the required one.

-  Applicants with foreign educational qualifications have to produce evidence that these are equivalent to § 18 NHG, and demonstrate adequate German proficiency in accordance with Point 5.2.

1.1 The requirement stipulated under Point 1 above may be waived for applicants demonstrating outstanding artistic aptitude as set out in NHG § 18. In this case, the applicant is to submit a portfolio containing at least 20 items of the applicant’s latest work, and if necessary take a special aptitude examination. Passing the examination is equivalent to the higher education entrance qualification.
Only those applicants whose work demonstrates artistic talent may be allowed to take  the special aptitude examination. The mere lack of a higher education entrance  qualification is no reason for taking this examination.

2.  Artistic aptitude

Demonstrated by the presentation during the interview of a portfolio with at least 20 items of the applicant’s latest work dealing with drawing (nature and object studies), painting and plastic arts (in the latter case, photographs may be submitted if applicable).

3.  Work placement

Applicants are to submit details of basic experience in a social-work related field  lasting at least six months covering 600 hours, or an appropriate vocational training.

4.  Orientation week and admission interview

Completion of a five-day orientation week and an admission interview at the Fachhochschule. Artistic work prepared during the orientation week is to be presented at the admission interview.

5.  Other requirements

Language proficiency: Foreign applicants are required to demonstrate the required  language proficiency by submitting a certificate testifying that they have either  passed the examination  “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” (DHS), Level 2
or   “Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestdaF)”, Level 4.

6.  Failure to pass/repetition of the admission examination

6.1  If an applicant fails the examination s/he may repeat it two more times, provided the  examiner approves.

6.2  If the quality of the artistic work presented for admission is below standard, then the  applicant has failed the admission examination.

6.3  If the applicant is still interested in studying at the Fachhochschule, then s/he has to re- apply with all necessary documents, and the whole admission procedure be repeated.  - In general, the lecturer who assessed the first admission examination as failed will  oversee the repeat examination.

6.4  Admission with reservations may only be granted if formalities are not met (e.g. proof  of work experience/work placement, stamp  of authentication, proof of German  proficiency in the case of foreign applicants). Applicants have to ensure that  formalities are submitted on time before starting their studies. Proof of German  proficiency must be submitted two months before the beginning of the trimester at the  latest.

6.5  All missing formalities have to be submitted by a fixed deadline, if possible at short  notice, and arranged with the examiner responsible for the admission. If the applicant  does not adhere to this deadline, then the reservation is no longer valid, and the  admission examination considered as failed. If the applicant should still be interested  in studying at the Fachhochschule, then the procedure described under Point 6.1 will  come into force.

6.6  Applicants not in possession of the higher education entrance qualification will not be  admitted to the course, not even with reservations.
