The Studio: A place to exchange ideas. A place for art

Our training and education concept provides students with an opportunity to learn from themselves, the teaching staff and their fellow students, and enables them to develop their own artistic approaches. The Studio is not simply a room containing easels and tables daubed with paint, but is more a meeting point for people who “want to do something with art”.

The Studio is a place where the students can jointly share the same experience, and explore the concepts of the teaching staff and their fellow students. It is here that experience can be both gained and exchanged. Opportunity is provided to not only provoke reactions, but also to respond to them.
The Studio is a place where criticism may be voiced and also received, and it is through the honing of conceptional, creative and reflective skills that the students learn to develop their own artistic language.

Consequently, along with individual discussions with lecturers, joint group discussions focussing on the students’ work constitute an important part of the studies. Furthermore, the lecturers not only supervise, and provide advice to, the students when preparing regular presentations of their work, but also furnish assistance for artistic projects conducted outside the Fachhochschule Ottersberg.

Places are reserved for the students in the painting and sculpture studios throughout their entire studies. Moreover, a workshop is available with printing facilities for purposes of etching, woodcut printing, lino printing and screen printing. In addition to this, there are also facilities on offer for photography and video work. Alongside the work in the Studio, students may also attend the scientifically-oriented lectures dealing with such subjects as art, aesthetics or philosophy at the Fachhochschule Ottersberg.

Artistic practice and project-oriented work

Exercises and seminars take place parallel to the practically-oriented artistic work conducted in the Studio, the aim being to impart know-how in craftsmanship and art theory, and examine concepts and positions of contemporary art, by visiting exhibitions etc,.
Project-oriented work conducted outside the Fachhochschule Ottersberg as well as regular public presentations of the results of their studies prepare the students for their professional life, and furthermore pave the way for a career as a freelance artist.
Painting and sculpturing may be elected as major subjects.
